Beauty and The Beast

My role for Beauty and The Beast was a set constructor, A set constructor interrelates with a set designer to take their design and use their skills to work with other set constructors to craft the design and make the idea into reality. For The Beauty and The Beast, me and the workshop team put together a front hanging border, hanging rose trellis and a large rear portal all constructed from ply wood. The Set constructor/painter is a crucial role in a crew as they are the essentially the workhorses of a project, without them the project wont be made. So I played a very crucial role in the team interrelating with the set desginer, production managers and props management/stage management.

The skills a Set constructor needs are:

  • Building technique knowledge (such as crafting hinges with wood)

  • Good communication skills

  • Good listening skills

  • Good time management skills

  • Must be efficient and precise

My secondary role for this production was being part of the health and safety team. As part of the health and safety team, it is my job to collaborate with my peers to study whichever site the production team will be working in for potential risks and hazards and note them down into a "Risk Assessment", then establish ways for the team to avoid these possible dangers. My Job is to ensure that all members of the team take all the right measures to keep them as safe as possible while on site. This is important as without my role a lot of people would not be aware of some of the dangerous outside their fields of expertise and could possibly fall victim to a hazard, they had no idea existed. It is my job to go around each department and identify every risk and forge all hazards and solutions into one list for everyone to read and be aware of to avoid any harm coming to any of the crew members. This has a massive impact as the top priority of every acting theatre company should be ensuring the safety of all working and visiting individuals. This is important as if harm falls to an actor or crew member (lawsuits/injury pay-out aside) the company will have to find a new person to take their place, which in the middle of show week or just before can be incredibly difficult and leads to many new problems.
