Job Roles and Research

Production designers interrelate with the director to bring their artistic intention to life in the form of a lively production. They read the script and consult the director and producer to determine the visual elements needed to bring the show to life. The production designer works with the set painters and designers to make the play have whatever aesthetic they desire. As a production designer in a actual show, I would interrelate with the set designers and constructors to bring the set to life. I would also work with the Director to bring their vision to life and know exactly what it is they want out of me. A production managers skills consist of having to be a confident individual when it comes to speaking with others, as well as being confident in their technical skills, project management skills; they need to be organised and efficient to get tasks done on time, need to have good problem-solving skills.

My job role for the Witcher project was a production/set designer. As a set designer, I had to design a set for a production, but before I could find inspiration via research. Because our project was based of of the Witcher project, I researched the Netflix series and the video game series about the show. This helped me understand the time period it was set in and allowed me to find some inspiration for the set I wanted, which was a cabin in the woods. So, using the power of google, I found some pictures of cabins in the woods for some design inspiration. The one photo which really caught my eye was the cabin  from the movie the Counjering. It was an old log cabin, and was also exactly what i was looking for, therefore I decided to try and find the measurements to create a scale drawing of the cabin, but was unable to do so; instead, I compared the size of the door in the photo to doors around the college building and used the measurements from them to estimate the size of the building.

Designers use scale drawings to get a drawing of a large building onto paper, by scaling the drawing down so it fits on paper and keeps the exact measurements. Designers usually use scales between 1:25/50/100

The Kit I used for the model box was:

  • A scalpel (Three line technique)

  • Foam Boards

  • A scale ruler

  • A normal CM ruler

  • Pins and glue

  • Pencil and rubber

  • Foam sheet

  • Scissors

For The Witcher project, I decided to choose to do set construction for a location that could be used in the Netflix tv series, The Witcher. After some research, I found that The Witcher was a medieval based show where the main characters are mainly traveling around their world. Due to the medieval setting and constant change of location in the story, I decided that a simple old wooden cottage/cabin would perfectly for a nice and easily constructible set.

So I researched different types of log cabins in forestry areas and the most common example I found was the cabin from the movie The Conjuring. The  location and design of the building was almost exactly what I was looking for, so I based my design off of the house in the movie
